Lei Kaiāulu

Lei Kaiāulu is an educational program designed to address academic outcomes through a more holistic approach where students learn about community and environmental issues, how those issues are being addressed, and develop a plan to engage community to increase awareness on the issues.

The project has three core components aimed at improving student learning through community immersion using  relevant, place-based learning experiences.

  • Integrated, place-based learning - teaching leadership and design-thinking through culture and relevant community issues

  • Professional development for kumu - helping teachers implement effective, culturally-relevant practices and encouraging learning with haumāna

  • Community engagement (leadership and workforce development) - connecting haumāna with industry experts and  partners to learn about community issues, how they are being addressed, and potential careers
